Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Legislature shelled out a cool $357 million for the project, aiming to modernize mental health care and ditch the limitations of the previous building.

Steeped in over a century of history, the San Antonio State Hospital has been a psychiatric care stalwart since 1892. Replacing the old facility, the new hospital boasts 300 beds and intends to extend its services to more than 50 counties in South Texas. Information shared by Texas Health and Human Services Commission noted that the facility was funded with the vision to provide 'state-of-the-art care' and eliminate the 'challenges older buildings pose for modern health care.'
