San Diego Enjoys Mild Temperatures, Gusty Winds and Swell Conditions on the HorizonSource: Flickr / Peyri Herrera

San Diegans can expect a mild chill as temperatures dip slightly across the county. According to the National Weather Service, we're looking at a few degrees below what's typical near the coast today. The deserts continue to bake with temps around 5 degrees above average. Coastal areas will have highs in the more comfortable 60s, and valleys will stay in the 70s.

Brace yourselves, commuters and patio diners—Friday brings gustier conditions. The NWS warns of "gusty southwest to west winds for the mountains and deserts this afternoon and tonight with the stronger gusts to 40 to 50 mph with another round of gusty winds for Friday afternoon and night with the stronger gusts to 45 to 55 mph." So hold onto your hats and maybe opt for an indoor seat if you're dining al fresco.

Surfers and beachgoers are in for a treat as a long-period swell from the southern hemisphere continues to roll in, creating risks for powerful rips but also offering up to 6-foot waves, particularly on south-facing beaches. As for the sailors and sea-faring folk, the NWS assures no hazardous marine conditions are expected through Monday, making it smooth sailing for all.

Looking ahead, Saturday promises a bit of relief from the cooling, with temperatures set to rise slightly. But enjoy the warmth while it lasts, as the onset of next week looks like it's bringing a cooling trend again. According to the National Weather Service's Area Forecast Discussion, "low pressure develops near the West Coast," ushering in cooler days ahead. For those hoping Palm Springs might hit its first 100-degree day of 2024, odds now point to a potential delay until May.
