In a move to drastically overhaul Seattle's streetscape, the Seattle City Council has unanimously passed the ambitious Seattle Transportation Plan. The 20-year strategy aims to reshape the city's transportation network, tackling everything from potholes to public transit. According to the official statement from the Seattle City Council, the recently passed legislation promises to prioritize safety, sustainability, and accessibility for the Emerald City's thoroughfares.

Councilmember Rob Saka, the Transportation Committee's lead, is the primary sponsor of the plan, which emerged from a two-year joint operation between the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), the Mayor's Office, and the Council. "Seattleites deserve safe, reliable, and accessible transportation," Saka communicated in the official release. It's evident the council intends to fully back SDOT in their endeavors to better maintain and modernize the city's transportation infrastructure.

Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth, Vice Chair of the Transportation Committee, didn't miss a beat to emphasize the council's commitment, stating, "It’s time for us to prioritize the bold basics of local government. From filling potholes to expanding access to public transit, this 20-year vision for the future of Seattle’s roads does just that." Aside from infrastructure rehabilitation, the plan has its eyes set on reducing traffic fatalities and slashing greenhouse gas emissions to make roads more efficient, according to the Seattle City Council.

Embodying more than simply intention, the plan lists 81 projects that could be pursued over the span of two decades to meet established targets. While it doesn't pin down specific funding, it aims to inform future budget deliberations, including the proposed Transportation Levy renewal. Seattle is poised to take significant steps towards modernizing its streets, sidewalks, and other essential infrastructures, enhancing both the function and form of its urban environment.
