Diving into the heart of the matter, Seattle's swimming scene is getting an inclusive makeover. Seattle Parks & Recreation has joined forces with Oshun Swim School in an initiative that's making waves by providing specialized swimming opportunities tailored for the city's Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) + Allies community. This program, part of the larger Swim Seattle campaign, aims to foster a trauma-informed and Afro-Indigenous centered environment, where the focus is not just on learning to swim, but on building a positive relationship with the water.
Transforming Rainier Beach Community Center & Pool into a catalyst for change, the collaboration introduces monthly BIPOC + Allies Open Swims. These sessions are designed for women and non-binary BIPOC folks who are starting out or looking to sharpen their aquatic skills in a supportive atmosphere. But it's not just about honing your freestyle or perfecting your butterfly. Here, participants can expect a blend of culture, with music setting the vibe and a community spirit that makes the pool feel like home. And for the record, allies are invited to join the party because everyone's welcome to splash in this pool of inclusivity.
Bringing it back to the basics, the goal of this partnership is to create a "safer space for BIPOC + Allies to explore our relationship with water," as reported by Seattle Parks & Recreation. It's a meaningful mission, considering the historical and cultural significance of swimming for many communities of color and the often-unspoken trauma associated with segregation and unequal access to swimming facilities. Through educational workshops and open swims, participants are diving into deeper conversations and narratives about our connections with water.
The open swims are set to take place on Saturdays from 5:30-7:00 p.m. for those 16 and up, showcasing a commitment to fostering a community-centric vibe where everyone feels at ease. Whether you're just dipping your toes in or you're ready to make a competitive splash, the program emblematically opens its arms wide. Mark your calendars and check out the flyer for the full list of dates, because this is one swim schedule making a real difference in downtown Seattle's aquatic scene.
