Six Arrested After Attempted Car Theft Leads to High-Speed Chase in WestlandSource: Google Street View

In what can only be described as a harrowing early morning pursuit, Westland police arrested six individuals, including four minors, following an attempted car theft gone awry. The incident, which unfolded at around 2:20 a.m. on April 11, began when officers responded to reports of attempted vehicle theft on the 35000 block of Hunter Avenue, as reported by WWJ Newsradio.

Upon arrival, authorities observed a stolen white Kia Optima attempting to swiftly flee the scene, the situation quickly escalating to a dangerous high-speed chase. The fleeing car then proceeded to miserably crash into multiple garages, before nearly hitting a police officer and subsequently striking the driver’s side door of the officer's patrol vehicle, according to ClickOnDetroit.

The chase finally concluded when the teen driver lost control and collided with a light pole at the intersection of Ford Road and Central City Parkway. As reported by FOX 2 Detroit, the car was roughly 1.5 miles away from the initial crime scene. A 15-year-old Detroit girl, who was identified as the driver, attempted to escape on foot but was promptly arrested and has since been housed at the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Three other minors involved—a 12-year-old girl, a 13-year-old boy, and a fourth whose age was not disclosed—were also taken into custody before being turned over to parents, and they now await the progression of forthcoming criminal complaints. Two adults, 18-year-olds James Hayes and Kahari Thomas, have been arraigned on the felony charge of receiving and concealing stolen property and are bound to wear GPS monitors.

All six individuals are due for a probable cause hearing scheduled for April 25 as the legal proceedings continue to unfold. The Westland Police Department's swift action has brought what could have quite potentially been a disastrous incident to a close, underscoring the gravity of car theft and the perilous consequences that can ensue, especially when it involves young perpetrators behind the wheel.
