A Springfield man, already in custody for a separate murder charge, now faces additional charges after a police investigation linked him to a January shooting that seriously injured another man.

According to the Springfield Police Department, the incident occurred on January 30th, when officers were called to State and Hancock Streets at approximately 8:05 p.m. and found a male victim with a severe head injury. Initially, treated for the injury, doctors later discovered it was a result of a gunshot, setting off an investigation by the Springfield Police Detective Bureau under Captain Trent Duda.

Roman Holguin, 36, of Springfield, emerged as a suspect in the case after a thorough probe by detectives. On April 3rd, he was identified and an arrest warrant was issued. Earlier in the day, Holguin had already been arrested and charged with an unrelated murder in West Springfield.

The Hampden District Attorney's Office says Holguin is now charged with firearm-armed assault to murder, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building. These charges add to his legal troubles, with authorities now prosecuting him for the January shooting alongside the separate murder charge.
