Springfield Police Arrest Two Teens Suspected of Attempted Hyundai TheftSource: Wikipedia/Klaus with K, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Earlier today, Springfield police arrested two teenagers, ages 15 and 16, for trying to steal a Hyundai on King Street around 2:45 a.m. The Springfield Police Department confirmed the arrest on its official website.

Officers were quick to the scene after spotting the duo in the act, but the suspects made a break for it upon noticing the approaching officers. Despite the hasty retreat, the police assessed the damage to the vehicle, promptly contacted the owner, and began canvassing the neighborhood. Eventually, the suspects didn't get far and were apprehended on Lebanon Street, a short distance from the scene of the attempted theft. One of them was found carrying tools typically used for burglary.

Because of their age, the authorities aren't releasing the suspects' names or booking photos, following rules for juvenile offenders. Both young men were arrested and will face charges for the crime. What might have led these youths to engage in unlawful activities is unfortunately a common story in our cities.

The Springfield Police Department has taken this incident as an opportunity to issue a public advisory, especially for owners of Hyundai and Kia models. With a markedly high rate of break-ins and thefts involving these vehicles, law enforcement encourages residents to invest in "highly visible steering wheel locking device" to discourage potential thieves. The SPD's alert comes as a clarion call for vehicle owners to take proactive measures to secure their automobiles from such misfortunes.
