Glendale's Independence High School is grappling with allegations of misconduct after teacher Estevan Carreon was arrested for reportedly recording students undressing. According to ABC15, the 53-year-old teacher arranged a spring break meeting for extra credit where he secretly set up spy cameras in a classroom changing room.
The illicit operation unraveled when two male students stumbled upon what appeared to be a power charger doubling as a hidden camera, leading to the discovery of two more cameras and the subsequent involvement of law enforcement. The Glendale Police Department, after obtaining a warrant and seizing an SD card from Carreon's home, reportedly discovered footage of nude female students, adding charges of voyeurism and sexual exploitation of a minor to Carreon's arrest docket; he faces multiple charges and while the investigation for additional victims presses on, he has been placed on administrative leave by the school district and was later terminated.
Meanwhile, just miles away, the Buckeye community contends with its breach as a former Odyssey Institute teacher and athletic coach, Alyssa Todd, was implicated in sex crimes involving a student. Buckeye Police revealed that after receiving a tip-off, possibly from Todd's own family, they examined communications between the 23-year-old Todd and the 15-year-old victim, uncovering evidence of sexual abuse taking place both on and off school grounds over two months as described in another ABC15 report.
This arrest marks the third such case involving a female educator in the region within a year, as the Buckeye Police Department notes, with Todd now facing multiple charges including sexual conduct with a minor and sexual exploitation of a minor; she was apprehended on a Wednesday at a home in Buckeye, and investigators press forward with their investigation.
Authorities and school officials deal with the fallout and work to ensure such incidents are not repeated in an era where trust in educational institutions is ever fragile.
