Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has slapped a St. Clair County man with multiple counts of child pornography possession, his office has confirmed in its ongoing effort to crack down on internet exploiters. In a case that underscores the aggressive pursuit of online child sexual exploitation, 45-year-old Seth MacDonald of O’Fallon was charged with 11 felonies, each carrying a potential sentence of three to seven years imprisonment.
MacDonald is cooling his heels in St. Clair County Jail following a collaborative bust involving local and federal agencies. Discovered by investigators during a search at his residence on April 9, after which child pornography was located, MacDonald now faces grave legal repercussions, according to the Office of the Illinois Attorney General.
In a statement highlighting the vital role of Raoul's "Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force," the Attorney General said: "These charges highlight the importance of my office’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in holding alleged perpetrators accountable for exploiting children." Through his authority, Raoul has promised to continue the collaboration to unearth such heinous crimes.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, the ICAC Task Force in Illinois is part of a nationwide network designated to confront the specter of child exploitation. According to the Attorney General's announcement, a significant surge in cyber tip-off reports received by the ICAC is a clear indicator of the internet's dark underbelly, with a 46% increase observed in the last year alone.
The public can take action against child sexual exploitation by reporting to cybertipline.com and dcfsonlinereporting.dcfs.illinois.gov, as encouraged by Attorney General Raoul.
