Flames ascended early Tuesday morning at a Fayetteville construction site near Piedmont Fayette Hospital, with officials suspecting an act of arson. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Fayetteville Police Department has tagged the incident as intentional, after several pieces of construction equipment including a backhoe were found with signs of deliberate damage.
In a statement obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, local authorities announced that "Several pieces of construction equipment were burned, and arson is suspected." This suspected arson happened adjacent to the hospital complex on the west side of Highway 54, threatening to not just disrupt but also to endanger a site that unwinds close to vital healthcare infrastructure.
The torched equipment belonged to Brasfield and Gorrie, a leading contractor embroiled in controversy over their work on the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, which protestors have dubbed "Cop City." The connection to these protests has not been ruled out, with previous incidents suggesting an ongoing and fiery opposition. Capt. Austin Dunn with the Fayetteville Police Department clarified that while the motive remains unknown, they are determined to fully "look into everything" and "not going to rule anything out until we know."
Brasfield and Gorrie have previously been targeted by protestors, with arrests made in March when demonstrators chained themselves to a crane, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. History has it that in January, activists similarly locked themselves to equipment at a different site and vandals hit the company's headquarters in Alabama in the preceding spring.
Law enforcement agencies spanning local, state, and federal levels are collaborating to collect evidence and follow leads. The authorities are reaching out to the community for any additional information, requests channeled through the Fayetteville Police Department and Crime Stoppers contact details.
