An anonymous threat shook West Ottawa High School yesterday morning, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department reported that multiple schools in the area sheltered in place as a precaution while the threat was investigated. An early half-day dismissal at the high school proceeded with increased security, according to WOOD TV8.
"We believe that it's an unfounded threat at this point," Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jake Sparks told WZZM 13. "around April 20, unfortunately, historically, there has been violence and threats of violence on that date." Sparks explained that regardless of the nature of the threat, their protocol is consistent and serious.
Officials were quick to respond after the threatening call came in around 9:35 a.m. "Whether it’s a prank or a swatting-type situation or whatever’s going on, we respond to everything the same. We respond to it as if it's real, as if it's an emergency," Sparks stated in a report by WOOD TV8. The presence of deputies on location was hailed as a strong deterrent for any potential violence.
Holland Public Schools did not report receiving a threatening call, unlike West Ottawa High School. However, Holland Middle School was put on "Secure Level" due to its proximity to a school that did receive a threat, as reported by WHTC. The report also noted that no suspect has been identified or apprehended as of last night. The investigation into the source of the anonymous threat remains ongoing.
As the community marked the 25th anniversary of the Columbine High School shootings, the specter of such tragedies heightened vigilance among school officials and law enforcement. Capt. Sparks commended the swift actions of the school staff and law enforcement in a statement obtained by WOOD TV8. "That’s an amazing deterrent," he said.
The seriousness with which these threats are treated could potentially lead to felony charges for the individual responsible for the unfounded threat once apprehended. Those with information related to the threat against West Ottawa High School are encouraged to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office or Silent Observer.
