A fierce blaze gutted a duplex on Hemlock Road Saturday night, prompting a three-alarm response from local fire departments, officials said. The Sudbury Fire Department was called to 82 Hemlock Road around 8 p.m. after reports of a fire engulfed the two-family home, Chief John Whalen said, according to a press release.
Firefighters who were overwhelmed by "extremely heavy flames coming from the rear of the residence" and had to retreat from their initial interior attack. No residents were present during the incident, and no injuries have been reported. The home, however, is expected to be a total loss, and displaced residents are receiving help from friends and family.
Firefighting units from Framingham, Wayland, Marlborough, Stow, and Concord rushed to assist Sudbury in battling the blaze, while Lincoln, Bedford, and Weston departments provided station coverage. The crews are expected to remain on scene through the night to perform overhauling operations, ensuring the fire does not rekindle as the investigation commences.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Sudbury Fire Department and the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, supported by the District 14 Regional Fire Investigation Team.
