Gunfire shattered the peace of Seattle's Chinatown-International District late on a Sunday night leading to a flurry of police activity and the eventual arrest of two suspects. According to the Seattle Police Department's Blotter, the incident unfolded after officers, who were stationed near Seventh Avenue South and South Main Street at around 10:46 p.m. on April 3, heard the sound of gunfire.
Upon investigation, shell casings were discovered but the vehicle from where the shots were believed to have been fired, had sped off into the night. Relying on witness descriptions, the police later identified and stopped the suspect vehicle. In a dramatic turn, Seattle police identified and arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of being the shooter, and a 21-year-old passenger on unrelated charges, both now facing serious legal repercussions.
During their intervention, officers spotted a gun and shell casings in the car, resulting in the driver's arrest for investigation of drive-by shooting and DUI – drugs. A search of the perpetrator revealed a ghost gun — concerning evidence of the evolving nature of illegal weapons. A troubling array of narcotics, including 14.5 grams of fentanyl powder, and dozens of pills were found with the 22-year-old.
The passenger was not just an innocent bystander; during the traffic stop, he was arrested on charges of a prior violation of the Uniformed Controlled Substance Act. Found in his possession were pills, fentanyl powder, and methamphetamine. The recovered evidence speaks volumes about the grave drug crisis that plagues our communities.
Both suspects were booked into the King County Jail following their arrests, marking a swift conclusion to a case that could have escalated far beyond the initial drive-by gunfire. The vehicle, now sequestered behind the impound lot's gates, will undergo further scrutiny as investigators piece together the night's perilous events and seek to bring full accountability to those embroiled in the chaos.
