A high-speed tragedy unfolded on Buford Highway yesterday morning, leaving two dead and three injured in its wake, officials reported. The calamity struck near the 285 corridor when a black Mazda, allegedly driven at excessive speeds, veered from its path and collided head-on with a Chevy Silverado, as per Doraville officials. FOX 5 Atlanta notes that the incident occurred in the 5200 block of the highway, resulting in critical injuries to two individuals who were promptly transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, while the Silverado driver sustained less severe injuries, his condition being stable.
Local residents near the accident site reported being stunned by the violent sounds produced by the collision, "I just come right there when I hear the accident, It’s really very... boom," explained Elias Ramos to WSB-TV, indicating the impact's loudness, while another witness, Varenka Samantha Cortez, was quoted saying she heard what sounded like "3 crashes, Like 3 cars bumping into each other, But it only honestly just two," during her class. The extensive damage to the Mazda was evident, and witnesses were perplexed at the survival of any occupants; the heartbreak for the families of the deceased was echoed by Cortez, saying, “I feel bad for the family members because that’s two losses right there.”
Doraville Police and the Georgia State Patrol are actively investigating the circumstances of the collision, including the reported high-speed driving of the Mazda, leading up to the devastating event. Details about the victims have not been released, however, witnesses told WSB-TV that the Mazda's occupants appeared to be teenagers.
Meanwhile traffic on Buford Highway faced significant disruption as multiple lanes were closed following the accident, with authorities urging motorists to avoid the area during the investigation, travelers found themselves seeking alternate routes to navigate around the stricken stretch of road. While investigations continue, a city waits, perhaps not for answers that will soothe the sorrow, but at least for reasons that will make sense of the senseless.
