Starting April 8 at noon EDT, the United States Mint will release rolls and bags of the new American Innovation $1 Coin celebrating Alabama's contributions to the space race. The featured innovation is the state's Saturn V rocket, developed at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, according to a statement from the US Mint. Collectors can choose between various packaging options, with prices ranging from $34.50 for a 25-coin roll to $117.50 for a 100-coin bag.
In a nod to Alabama’s space exploration legacy, the Mint is offering these coins in rolls and bags from Philadelphia (P) and Denver (D) facilities. "I am pleased to announce the release of the American Innovation $1 Coin for the State of Alabama,” said Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson, reflecting on the coin's homage to the state's historic contribution to moon exploration. Governor Kay Ivey also praised the coin's significance, saying, “It was Alabamians who helped put man on the moon, and today, we remain committed to ensuring our country is not only on the forefront of space exploration, but innovation in all areas," as per the statement obtained by the US Mint.
The coin's design is sure to catch the eye of collectors. The reverse side shows the mighty Saturn V during liftoff against a backdrop of the Moon, emblazoned with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “SATURN V,” and “ALABAMA,” while the obverse continues to honor the Statue of Liberty. The American Innovation $1 Coin Program which began in 2018, seeks to highlight the pioneering achievements across all 50 states and U.S. Territories.
