A man from Washington state admitted to a federal court in Seattle that he sexually assaulted a woman on an airplane, confirming earlier reports from several outlets. Desmond Bostick, aged 25, faced charges for his conduct on an Alaska Airlines flight from San Diego to Seattle on June 20, 2023, where he was accused of groping the victim, reported KING5.
Seated in the plane's last row, Bostick engaged in the unwanted touching of the woman sitting beside him, this led to a later indictment by a federal grand jury and witnesses on the flight corroborated the victim's account of the incident. After the victim reported the incident post-flight, Bostick left the airport undetected and was not immediately apprehended, this detail was shared by FOX13 Seattle.
Bostick entered his guilty plea on Thursday, acknowledging the act was driven by sexual motivation as part of his plea agreement, which was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington. The plea opens the way for a potential 9-month prison sentence, scheduled for a July hearing, as indicated by the same release referenced by KING5.
The incident is part of a worrying trend in airborne misconduct, with an alarming spike in sexual assault cases on flights, the FBI's statistics underscore how from 2019 through 2021, there was a reported 25% increase in investigations of this nature, a figure that jumped significantly from 27 cases in 2018 to 90 in 2022 and 62 already in the current year, KIRO7 noted.
The Justice Department has not yet released a statement on the proceedings' outcome, however, the seriousness of the charge and Bostick's guilty plea suggests a heightened attention to incidents of this character; the sentencing set for July will offer closure to the unsettling event that transpired nearly a year ago, marking an end to this specific case while shedding light on the broader issue haunting airline travel.
