Whittier Wellness Community (WWC), a beacon of hope for under-resourced neighborhoods, re-opened its doors in a grand spectacle during the culmination of Public Health Week 2024. With support from The Los Angeles Department of Public Health and 25 community partners, this community hub promises free access to a gamut of health and wellness services.
Built on the three pillars - healing and trauma prevention workshops, CORE Center resources tailored for those struggling with substance abuse, and various health initiatives including nutrition and exercise programs, WWC is primed to serve. According to an announcement by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, since December 2023, the community has benefited 18,627 residents with these essential services. Hosting mental health services and wellness activities shows the commitment to their physical and emotional well-being.
At the heart of Whittier Wellness Community's blueprint is a bid to democratize health and well-being resources. Bridging healthcare gaps is the prime objective, ensconced each week from Monday to Wednesday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., with extended hours on Thursday for those who can't make the morning grind, clocking in from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., and closing out the week on Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"The goal of the Whittier Wellness Community is straightforward: to increase access for residents in under-served communities to the very resources needed for good health and well-being," said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, reiterating the communal vision.
