In a move to shine a light on autism awareness, the White Settlement Police Department (WSPD) has decked out its uniforms with new specialty badges and patches. The specialty Autism Awareness Badge, designed by Smith & Warren Badges, and the complementary Autism Awareness patch by Point Emblems have been introduced as a part of the department's effort to foster understanding and support for individuals with autism.
The White Settlement Police Department is also promoting its "Take Me Home" program, an initiative aimed at safely reuniting individuals with autism who may become separated from their families. CBS 11's Doug Dunbar took time to quickly highlight how the program allows community members to register their loved ones with the department. This preemptive step aims to ensure a swift and safe return should a wandering incident occur.
Details of the story were originally shared on the WSPD's Facebook page on April 7, showing officers proudly displaying their new badges and patches. The commendable designs feature the puzzle piece symbol, which is widely recognized as a symbol for autism awareness and the diverse spectrum of those living with autism.
Community relations and police approaches to mental health have long been topics of intense focus, and the WSPD's new initiative is part of a larger strategy to sensitively and proactively engage with vulnerable populations. Such efforts aim to not just raise awareness but also to foster a sense of security and inclusion for those who often find themselves easily misunderstood within the fabric of our society.
