According to CBS News Texas, the Fort Worth Police Department first responded at 2:45 a.m. today to the 2100 block of Handley Drive before redirecting officers to the scene on Oakland Hills Drive, a location about two miles away. Police have not released any details about what preceded the stabbing or explained why the initial call sent officers to Handley Drive before the investigation shifted to the apartment-dense block where the woman was found.
The Oakland Hills Drive address sits in the Woodhaven section of East Fort Worth, near Boca Raton Boulevard and Interstate 30, an area dominated by multi-family apartment communities, as previously reported by Hoodline. The same block was the site of a major missing-person search in December 2022, when 49-year-old Derek Coffelt vanished from his apartment complex there, leaving all of his belongings behind, according to Texas EquuSearch.
A Corridor With a History of Multi-Location Police Responses
Today's redirected response echoes a pattern seen before along the Handley corridor. The stabbing comes even as Fort Worth's overall homicide numbers continue to trend downward. Midyear 2026 data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association shows Fort Worth recorded 28 homicides in the first six months of the year, compared to 39 during the same period in 2025. Annual homicides in the city peaked at 118 in 2021 before falling steadily to 100 in 2022, 88 in 2023, and 76 in 2024 following targeted enforcement efforts including the #FortWorthSafe initiative, according to data compiled by Omnilert.
Those citywide gains have not eliminated pockets of violence in East Fort Worth, where police continue to face logistical strain. Should charges eventually be filed, any prosecution would unfold under Texas Penal Code Section 19.02, which classifies murder as a first-degree felony punishable by five to 99 years or life in state prison, along with a fine of up to $10,000, according to L&L Law Group. Tarrant County District Attorney Phil Sorrells' office has taken an aggressive posture on violent crime, bringing more than 962 cases to jury trial between January 2023 and April 2026 and securing 89 life sentences in that span.
