In a disturbing turn of events in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, a 14-year-old girl has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder for the death of her 79-year-old grandmother, Yevheniia Koval, as reported by CBS12.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said emergency services were summoned to a Northwest 41st Street apartment complex where they found Koval unresponsive with multiple bruises on her body; the son, who had left his mother in his daughter's care to visit a friend, discovered the grim scene upon his return.
Following an autopsy by the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office, which ruled Koval's death a homicide, detectives identified the teenage granddaughter as the suspect in the killing, according to details from NBC Miami.
Previously admitted to the hospital on the day of the murder for medical clearance, the accused was apprehended the following day and is now being processed at the Juvenile Assessment Center while prosecutors weigh the option of charging her as an adult, the court has heard her initial hearing and she remains detained pending further proceedings.
