To combat the leading cause of preventable death from trauma, the Allen Fire Department is stepping up to offer free ‘Stop the Bleed’ training, set for May 23 at the Terrell Recreation Center. The initiative is part of a national campaign aimed at teaching laypeople essential life-saving techniques.

According to the City of Allen, two sessions are available for hopeful heroes to learn how to stanch blood flow— one in the early afternoon from 1-2:30 p.m., and another in the evening from 7-8:30 p.m. The ‘Stop the Bleed’ program, which also finds itself marking its awareness day on May 23, empowers average citizens to act swiftly, and effectively, in the crucial moments following an injury.

For those interested in taking part in this potentially life-saving course, registration is currently open. The classes offered by the Allen Fire Department provide hands-on experience with techniques such as applying pressure, packing a wound, and using tourniquets.

The department’s point of contact, Tony Cooper, an AFD EMS Specialist, is available for questions at 214.509.4420.
