A vintage warbird came down in a residential area of Novi, Michigan, narrowly missing homes and causing no injuries on the ground, authorities said. The pilot, a 71-year-old man from Northville, was trying to make an emergency landing when the antique military plane crashed into a backyard on Cambridge Drive, north of Eight Mile Road, CBS News Detroit reported.
Occurring around 6:41 p.m. on Sunday, authorities were called to the scene where they discovered the downed aircraft, a detail confirmed by ClickOnDetroit. Reports said the pilot's antique military plane, though crashing, pleasingly didn't erupt into flames or disrupt local traffic, avoiding further catastrophe.
The sole occupant of the plane, the pilot was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Livonia with injuries described as minor. “The pilot was sent to the hospital with minor injuries," authorities said, as per WXYZ. Meanwhile, the incident left residents shaken, but unharmed.
The Federal Aviation Administration descended onto the scene, taking the reins of an investigation into what caused the pilot, flying the antique craft, to attempt an emergency landing. The FAA, which is handling the probe, has yet to release details about the potential mechanical failures or other factors that led to the Sunday sky drama, as traffic continued on Eight Mile Road without interruption, found sturdily undisturbed by the unexpected aviation incident.
