Arlington Encourages Water Conservation with Free Summer Programs and ActivitiesSource: City of Arlington, Texas

The town's Water Utilities, along with Tarrant Regional Water District and the Arlington Public Library, are rolling out free programs to promote water conservation this scorcher of a summer.

Residents with a green thumb or those simply wanting to save a few bucks on the water bill can get their hands dirty – literally – with some upcoming activities. Set your alarms for an early wake-up on May 18, 'cause from 9-10 a.m., you can learn about DIY Drip Irrigation straight from the horse's mouth – Tarrant County Master Gardener Steve Chaney is holding court at the Lake Arlington Native Plant and Pollinator Garden. According to the City of Arlington, Texas, volunteering for garden maintenance pre-talk kicks off at 8 a.m.

Bring the kids for some dirty fun at Family Volunteer Day on June 15. This isn’t your usual Saturday morning cartoons. From 8-10 a.m., you can teach them a bit about local flora and fauna while playing in the dirt at the Native Plant and Pollinator Garden. There's a bonus, too: an interactive talk on pollinators that's sure to buzz with information. SaveArlingtonWater.com is where you can register for this family-bonding eco time.

For those who like a side of sustainability with their home-grown herbs and veggies, mark June 22 on your calendars. From 2-3 p.m., the Southwest Branch Library is hosting a class on Edible Landscaping. Forget the typical backyard; imagine one where you can graze your way through.

Bee a friend to the environment and learn how to Build Your Own Bee Hotel come July 12, from 2-4 p.m. Hosted at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library, this shindig for anyone interested in rolling out the welcome mat for our fuzzy, flying friends. Habitat loss ain't no joke for wildlife, but you can help by building a backyard bee B&B. Arlington residents can buzz on over to SaveTarrantWater.com later this summer to register.
