Athens-Clarke County has announced that it will celebrate Juneteenth this year by altering its Leisure Services Department operations for the day. Juneteenth, which falls on Wednesday, June 19, will see parks maintaining their regular hours, though all other facilities will close their doors to the public, according to a release on the Athens-Clarke County government website.
Though the summer heat beckons children and families to outdoor activities, department-run summer camps will pause for the holiday, a day traditionally commemorating the end of slavery in the United States; however, there is a silver lining for those looking to dip their toes in the water—pools and splash pads will welcome guests from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m., and with the admission price at a mere dollar per person, there's little to bar access to relief from the Southern heat, save for the exclusion of Bishop Park pool which will remain shuttered for the season.
Residents of Athens-Clarke County and the surrounding area who might seek further information on the Juneteenth holiday schedule have been directed by the authorities to call the Leisure Services Department at (706) 613-3800 to learn more about the specific changes and closures in place for this federally recognized holiday, which has been celebrated annually since its establishment.
Notably, while the national day of observance provides an opportunity for reflection and commemoration of a pivotal moment in the nation's civil rights journey, it also serves as a practical reminder of the ways in which public services and community schedules adapt to honor such occasions—the Athens-Clarke County Juneteenth schedule alteration making that adaptation clear, as outlined in the official statement released by the Athens-Clarke County.
