Athen's streets just got a little safer after the Athens-Clarke County Police Department's gang unit stormed an apartment and seized a small arsenal belonging to a convicted felon. The bust went down last Friday at the Rolling Ridge Apartments, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
In a carefully executed operation, cops scored six firearms including four handguns, a pistol grip AR rifle, and a semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun. To clearly connect the dots, they relied on footage from the complex's security cameras, accessed through the ACCPD's RealTime Center—a tool to swiftly identify culprits. "They timed it when he was outside the apartment where the arrest could be made safely away from the firearms," Police Lt. Jody Thompson told Online Athens.
The target of the raid, 38-year-old Demetrius Lumpkin, wasn't at home during the search but was apprehended outside. Lumpkin already had a rap sheet and was adding to it after this latest stint. For a reckless conduct incident on May 12, where a firearm was discharged at the complex, he's now looking at additional charges.
Alongside the previous charges, Lumpkin's now charged with six counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and two more for Reckless Conduct. Initial charges penned him down for Reckless Conduct, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Tampering with Evidence from the previous incident. It would seem the gang unit aimed to strictly curtail his access to these lethal tools. Lumpkin remains in the Athens-Clarke County Jail without bond on several charges, waiting for what the justice system has in store for him.
