A woman caught in the crossfire during a Mother's Day shooting at the Elleven45 Lounge in Buckhead bravely shared her story, revealing the harrowing ordeal that left her with bullet wounds in both legs. Lauryn Moore, who had traveled to Atlanta to celebrate alongside friends, recounted to FOX 5 how she was compelled to "fight" through the pain, driven by the thought of her family, "All I said was I have to be here for my mom, my siblings, and my friends. And I just kept on fighting. If I didn't fight, I probably wouldn't be here," Moore said.
While Moore is grateful to have survived, she is also wrestling with her disrupted future; she faces the challenge of beginning nursing school without the ability to work, due to her injuries, Moore's situation is heightened by the looming financial pressures of education, which she had hoped to cover through wielding two jobs, and now, Moore is relying on the charity of others through a GoFundMe campaign. The absence of security measures at the venue has come under scrutiny, Moore's attorney, Terance Madden, criticized the club's lack of security, saying, "If you are going to run a place where you are entrusted with someone's health and welfare and you put security that would allow someone to bring in guns, when you already have a bad record, that is just not something the city of Atlanta can stand," as reported by FOX 5.
Meanwhile, the Elleven45 Lounge is confronting legal turmoil following the shooting that not only injured Moore but took the lives of two individuals, including Mari Creighton, a standout volleyball player at Albany State University. Creighton's family, represented by Atlanta Attorney Michael Sterling, is preparing to file a lawsuit against the club on the grounds of negligence, the club is accused of failing to provide adequate security and allowing the shooter to enter the establishment armed, "This act of negligence stole the life of an exceptional young woman," Sterling's statement read, which was obtained by 11Alive.
Despite the shooting's aftermath, the City of Atlanta responded swiftly with Mayor's office spokesperson stating that, at the directive of the Mayor, the city is probing multiple issues connected to the property, and the Mayor is geared up to utilize various tools to enhance community safety "We are looking into a number of matters involving the property and working with the appropriate departments and agencies to take any necessary action. There are several tools at the Mayor’s disposal, and he will not hesitate to leverage any of them to keep our communities safe and thriving," the statement promised, according to 11Alive. In the wake of these tragedies coupled with a history of violent incidents, including a past shooting at another venue owned by the same proprietors as Elleven45 Lounge, the community and families affected continue to seek justice and change.
