A violent altercation in North Austin culminated in a man’s death after a police officer shot him while he was reportedly stabbing a woman, local authorities say. In the early hours of Monday morning, the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to a distress call involving a loud argument and breaking glass at an apartment complex on the 12500 block of Tech Ridge Boulevard, as KXAN reports.

Screams for help and sounds of a struggle were heard in a follow-up call, prompting the police to the scene where they found a woman being critically stabbed, an APD Interim Chief of Police, Robin Henderson detailed at a news conference, information sourced from FOX 7 Austin; the sound of distress led officers to force entry and confront an additional barricaded door behind which the dire scene unfolded, the suspect atop the victim in the midst of the assault.

According to both reports, officers attempted to enter the apartment, and upon receiving no response, they forced their way through, subsequently firing upon the male assailant. Post-shooting procedures saw the unidentified woman rushed to the hospital in critical condition while the suspect was pronounced dead at 3:05 am; APD did not release information on the nature of the relationship between the two individuals involved.

The involved officer, whose name has not been disclosed, has since been placed on administrative duty as per standard protocol, APD will conduct a dual investigation to scrutinize the incident—a criminal investigation by the APD Special Investigations Unit in partnership with the Travis County District Attorney's Office, and an administrative probe by the APD Internal Affairs Unit with oversight from the Office of Anatomy Police Oversight, as both outlets disclosed. Members of the public with information have been encouraged to reach out to the authorities to aid the ongoing investigation.
