Chaos erupted in a Surprise neighborhood last week when a father, identified as Todd Christopher Marchetti, barraged into his ex-girlfriend's home and held his infant son hostage, leading to a tragic standoff with police and a subsequent house fire. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, body camera footage released Monday shows Surprise Police officers entering the barricaded home to rescue the baby, who had been shot multiple times by his own father.
The incident took place early Friday morning around 3 a.m., when Marchetti, 51, entered the house with a machete and would not let the occupants leave, officers stormed the residence to extract the wounded 7-month-old Jaxson. The tense situation unfolded as Surprise Police responded to a call for help from Allie, the mother of the child, who had managed to escape and alert authorities with the assistance of a construction crew. "The biggest hero of the day is Allie, Jaxson’s mom," Surprise Fire Chief Brenden Espie told FOX 10 Phoenix in a statement that acknowledged her life-saving actions.
The AZ Family reports that Jaxson, who was shot multiple times in the lower limbs, was airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for numerous surgeries. His grandfather, Michael Norman, expressed his astonishment and relief that his grandson survived such a critical ordeal, "[Jaxson’s] alive, he’s doing good, we need him in our life, and so we’re thankfu," Norman told AZ Family.
As the situation escalated, SWAT teams attempted to negotiate with Marchetti, who ultimately caused the house to catch fire. The situation ended when crews finally entered the house, after the flames had been doused and found Marchetti had taken his own life. In addition to the tragedy, the family lost their home due to the fire, but Allie has shown incredible strength despite the horrific events. "She's troubled by the whole thing. She's having nightmares. Not able to sleep. She sees Todd in her sleep," Norman disclosed to FOX 10 Phoenix.
Support efforts have been mobilized for Allie and Jaxson, with GoFundMe accounts set up to aid their recovery and assist the family in the aftermath of their home being destroyed.
