A prank planned by seniors at Cedar Creek High School escalated to significant damages and vandalism, Bastrop Independent School District officials confirmed. Despite the administration's collaboration with the class of 2024 to create a "fun senior prank" within bounds and under staff supervision, a faction of the class evidently took the joke too far, causing unspecified damage to school property over the weekend.
According to a statement obtained by KXAN, the district is distancing the entire graduating class from the actions of this "small group of students," emphasizing that these events do not reflect the ethos of Cedar Creek High School's Class of 2024. The anticipation of graduation celebrations later in the week should not be marred by these mishaps, the district added.
Reports from KVUE included accounts of classroom furniture damage, graffiti on the school band's truck, and personal items of teachers being vandalized. Additional reports pointed out that fire extinguishers had been discharged, soap and baby powder spread across floors, and that there was damage done to copies of final exams.
The senior class offered a collective mea culpa, stating "This behavior does not represent the rest of the class of 2024 that did not participate in these actions," a sentiment they shared in a statement to faculty. Furthermore, they engulfed the statement with sorrow for the actions that spiraled beyond the intended light-hearted farewell, as mentioned in the KVUE report. "On behalf of the class of 2024 we want to send our sincere apologies to all the teachers, staff, and students that were affected by the senior prank . Last night May 19th, 2024 was blown out of proportion and was never expected to get to that level. We as a whole would like to apologize for all the inappropriate behavior fellow classmates have shown. This behavior does not represent the rest of the class of 2024 that did not participate in these actions.
As our last goodbye we would hate to leave things as they are, once again we apologize," read the statement from the class.
Consequences for the students responsible are pending, as the Bastrop ISD Police Department and high school administration are ferreting out the culprits behind the damage. Bastrop ISD has made it clear that those identified will be held accountable for the vandalism.
