Bellevue City Council is pushing to level the playing field for small and minority-owned businesses, updating its Procurement Diversity Inclusion Plan to cut through the red tape. The original plan, part of Bellevue's Diversity Advantage Initiative since 2016, is getting a face-lift to better serve the vendors and open up more opportunities for the diverse business community, according to the city's latest report.

In an effort to drive inclusive growth, the city's upgrades, informed by feedback sessions lasting the previous year, will see to bolstering technical support and increasing the transparency of their data reporting. As recommended by outreach participants, technical support will help potential vendors better navigate business opportunities. Plans also include cultivating relationships with the vendor community and upgrading procurement practices to reflect innovative and inclusive standards.

The council aims to implement these updates swiftly. Among the suite of changes, the city will set up regular office hours for vendors, overhaul procurement processes and resources for clarity and simplicity, and throw events and workshops to foster learning and collaboration. These steps are geared towards maximizing the use of small and diverse businesses in city contracts.

Bellevue's city council is not just revamping its procurement approach but has its eyes set on federal collaboration. A draft of the 2024-2025 federal agenda, which outlines Bellevue's needs and goals for partnership with federal entities, was reviewed by council members. With a focus on communicating the city's legislative priorities to Congress and federal agencies, the council provided input on the draft and is scheduled to approve a final version soon, with advocacy efforts to continue through the year to drum up support for Bellevue's priorities.

The city is also pedaling a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle with its proclamation of May as Bike Everywhere Month. The council is urging folks to swap their gas-guzzlers for two-wheelers, promoting cycling as a viable option for commuting and leisure throughout the month and beyond. In line with community-focused initiatives, the council also highlighted national causes by recognizing both National Police Week and Affordable Housing Week, bringing attention to other critical facets of the city's dedication to public services and wellbeing.
