According to The White house press release, speakers such as White House Domestic Policy Advisor Neera Tanden, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg enumerated how the administration’s actions are designed to provide opportunity and prevent the outflow of residents seeking better prospects.
The newly introduced Rural Innovators Initiative stands as the centerpiece of the administration’s rural outreach, calling on the public to submit nominations by June 14. Those nominated are recognized individuals making significant strides in their rural areas, leading to generations of prosperity and stability for their communities. Additionally, the administration unveiled investments surpassing $671 million in rural infrastructure, aimed at improving the quality of life for over one million people through enhanced electricity and clean water services, along with the promise of job creation.
The Rural Communities in Action event is, in fact, a progression of the larger Investing in Rural America Regional Event Series, where senior officials tour rural parts of the nation, advocating for the administration's investments ranging from farming to infrastructure development. This comes within the ambit of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, described as a landmark investment in rural America, and includes a staggering $65 billion for affordable, reliable high-speed internet, alongside a $2 billion provision targeting high-speed internet on Tribal lands.
Reducing wildfire risks and boosting the capabilities of federal wildland firefighters through an $8.25 billion fund was highlighted as another significant component of the law. The US Department of Agriculture has dispersed $439 million to aid 257 project proposals spanning 36 states and 16 tribes, and directed $150 million to help forest landowners tap into new climate markets. The transportation sector, too, has been allocated substantial funds, such as $4.1 billion for Rural Area Formula Grants to upgrade transit systems and $2 billion over five years, for projects aimed at improving surface transportation infrastructure.
