In a dramatic rescue on Lake Erie, three individuals were rescued from the depths near Sterling State Park, after their boat met its watery demise on Sunday, officials reported. Witnesses fishing in the vicinity witnessed the vessel's downfall and sprang into action, pulling the boaters from the cold grip of the lake. According to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, obtained by The Detroit News, the boat sank in 25 feet of water about three miles from shore.
The call about the overturned vessel came in to Monroe County Central Dispatch at 3:23 p.m., following which, the sheriff's marine unit, Frenchtown Township Fire Department, and South Shore Marine Towing responded to the scene to aid in the recovery. Among the rescued was a 45-year-old man who was transported to ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, the other two were checked by paramedics and released at the scene, as per the account by CBS Detroit.
The Monroe County Sheriff, Troy Goodnough, has extended his gratitude towards the swift actions of both the first responders and the fishermen, who he referred to as good Samaritans, for their pivotal role in the successful, extraction of the victims. "Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough would like to thank the first responders as well as the good Samaritans who assisted with the successful recovery of the three victims involved.," the release stated, according to a news brief by 13abc.
Details about the incident, remain scarce, but a sheriff's office supervisor indicated that further information might be provided at a later time. Meanwhile, the Marine Unit is coordinating with area towboats for the vessel's recovery from its sunken state, and the United States Coast Guard has issued a safety alert about the submerged boat. The recovery operations for the sunken vessel are expected to take place in the coming days, ensuring Lake Erie's waters are clear of hazards
