A Brighton man has been nabbed after going on a high-dollar heist, swiping a staggering $47,000 in merchandise from a Back Bay store. Justin Smith, a 22-year-old employee, was arrested last night by officers from District D-4 on larceny charges, as reported by the Boston Police Department.
The arrest followed an incident at around 7:10 PM, when officers were called to the scene at 1 Ring Road after loss prevention employees caught Smith red-handed. According to the department's official report, he was observed attempting to secretly pass approximately $25,125 worth of goods to an accomplice in a vehicle on Ring Road. The loss prevention staff managed to detain him and recover the stolen items.
Further inquiry by officers revealed that this was not the first time Smith had helped himself to the store's merchandise—just the day before, he had made off with goods valued at $22,530. The stolen items from that theft had been handed off to an unidentified woman, who managed to avoid capture. The woman and her whereabouts are currently being sought by police as the investigation continues.
Smith, who now has to face charges greater than his purloined goods, was placed under arrest and charged with larceny over $1,200. He is slated to be summoned before a judge at Boston Municipal Court.
