Boston's finest were seen swapping handcuffs for handshakes at the recent Hyde Park Career and Higher Education Fair. Officers from the District E-18's Community Service Office made an appearance to inform locals about career paths within the Boston Police Department (BPD), notably the cadre of Boston Police Cadets. In a community outreach effort, the BPD's presence marks an attempt to bridge gaps and sow seeds of trust among the residents of the city.
While attendees perused future possibilities, officers eagerly dished out pamphlets and shared insights into the life of law enforcement in Boston. The BPD has been pushing to distinguish the Cadet Program from the traditional recruit training at the BPD's academy. According to the BPD's community update, "Cadets are a separate, distinct opportunity within the BPD, different from recruits who are in BPD’s academy engaged in the process of becoming Boston Police Officers."
The annual event, which plays host to various employers and educational institutions, serves as a platform for mutual learning. BPD's officers interacted, answered burning questions and gleaned insights into the community’s perception of policing. This two-way educational street is part of the BPD's larger mission to make in-roads into community relations and, show that a badge is not just about upholding the law but also about serving the public.
Moving forward, the BPD asserts its commitment to such community-based initiatives. Addressing the press, an officer expressed the department's anticipation of future interaction: "We look forward to educating our community about opportunities within the Department and learning more about them, and their neighborhoods at events like this in the future!"
