The Bullock Texas State History Museum is stepping up to salute the troops, providing free admission to active-duty military personnel and their kin this sweltering summer. According to a report by CBS Austin, the giveaway kicks off on Armed Forces Day, May 18, and will run through Labor Day, September 2, as part of the Blue Star Museums program.
In what's clearly a move to give back to those who serve, free entry will allow visitors to learn and leisurely explore three floors packed with Texas history and culture. In a statement obtained by CBS Austin, Bullock Museum Director Margaret Koch said, "It is our honor to recognize the service given by the nation's active military personnel and their families every day by participating in Blue Star Museums." This year, military families can also check out the Carros y Cultura: Lowriding Legacies in Texas exhibit.
But the love doesn't end there; CBS Austin adds that the museum’s generosity is sponsored by an anonymous donor, ensuring that the museum experience is accessible to military families seeking a slice of Texas history without the price tag. It's a commendable action since museum visits can quickly add up, especially for larger families.
The museum isn't just stopping at history. Highlighting the importance of art in dialogue, the Bullock Museum also tantalizes visual senses with The Harmon and Harriet Collection of African American Art: Works on Paper, an exhibit showcasing a wide array of Black American artistry. "We hope this effort provides them with opportunities to experience the Bullock throughout the summer with fewer economic barriers," Bullock Museum Director Margaret Koch told The Story of Texas.
Eligibility for the Blue Star Museums program, as detailed by The Story of Texas, includes armed forces members from all branches, along with the Reserves, and National Guard, and up to five family members.
