The city of Chandler has set the stage for enhanced community inclusiveness with its Parks & Recreation Division now recognized as a Certified Autism Center, as confirmed by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This prestigious title comes on the heels of extensive autism training for over 500 staff members, emphasizing the city's commitment to creating accessible and enjoyable experiences for all residents.

Recreation Superintendent Becky Kuiper expressed pride in the city's accomplishment, stating, "Becoming a Certified Autism Center is a testament to the hard work the City of Chandler staff has put forth to become a more inclusive community,” and elaborated on the division’s ethos, “Chandler Parks & Recreation believes everyone should have the opportunity to discover, imagine, and grow within our community through accessible and adaptable parks and recreation centers and inclusive programming.” Kuiper's remarks come as confirmation that, the division aims to cater to diverse community needs, ensuring safe and positive interactions.

As part of the certification, six local facilities underwent thorough assessments to better cater to individuals with sensory-processing sensitivities. These include the Chandler Nature Center, Espee Park, and four others, each poised to receive dedicated sensory guides for a more informed visitor experience. These guides aim to help individuals navigate the spaces in a manner that's mindful of their sensory needs.

Further bolstering its initiative, Chandler Parks & Recreation also provides specialized adaptive programs and modifications upon request for those with disabilities. In a move that's sure to make a splash, Chandler Aquatics is diving into the summer with adaptive swim lessons and sensory swim times for a quieter, more controlled pool environment. The drive towards inclusivity within the Parks & Recreation Division mirrors the City Council's proactive stance, which backed the strategy with a $10,000 budget amendment, approved in June 2023 for tailored training and program enhancement.

The five-year agreement with IBCCES outlines the city's long-term commitment to uphold the Certified Autism Center designation, with the recent Jan. 11 authorizations by the Chandler City Council as its foundation. With the Parks & Recreation Division leading the way, the Chandler community is now one step closer to fully embracing its residents' diverse needs and contributing to a more inclusive society.
