A routine traffic stop ended in a deadly confrontation at a Cobb County gas station when police attempted to pull over a suspect, authorities reported. The Friday afternoon incident at a Chevron near Mableton Parkway and Veterans Memorial Highway led to a suspect, identified as 40-year-old Clifford Jacoby Beck, being shot and killed by police after he tried to evade them, as 11Alive reported.
According to the details provided by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), an officer spotted a box truck sporting a stolen plate around 2:40 p.m., after which backup was called, and the situation quickly escalated. As police cornered the truck in the gas station parking lot, Beck attempted to flee, striking a pedestrian’s vehicle and several police cruisers in the chaos. Officers opened fire on the truck, striking Beck, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Alexis Rivera, an eyewitness and regular customer at the gas station described the mayhem, "The box truck just tried to outrun them. They tried to surround him. That is when the box truck started pushing the gas back and forth," Rivera recounted to Atlanta News First. The aftermath included a burnt-out truck and damaged police vehicles, captured by 11Alive's SkyTracker, giving indication to the ferocity of the encounter.
The aftermath caused not just by the collision, but by a resulting fire that engulfed both the box truck and a patrol car. Cobb County Fire Department personnel were able to extinguish the flames, police said. "The blaze was put out quickly," the Cobb Police affirmed in a press conference cited by 11Alive. The officers involved in the shooting have since been placed on administrative leave, a routine measure while the GBI's investigation is underway.
No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident. The ongoing investigation by the GBI aims to clarify the sequence of events that led to the deadly outcome. More information will be revealed as the case progresses.
