A Concord man's need for speed landed him behind bars. Scott Kitfield, 33, was sentenced for his part in a high-octane nightmare that stretched across multiple counties, ending in a police chase through a residential area of Concord. After generating public hazard complaints in 2022 for tearing down Interstate 680 in a gray BMW, Kitfield documented his recklessness on a YouTube channel, exhibiting speeds topping 100 mph and indulging in dangerous car races.

His self-made videos became his undoing as CHP investigators connected the dots between the complaints and Kitfield. According to the CHP - Golden Gate Division Facebook page, on July 14, 2023, a planned operation tracked Kitfield's blitz from Solano County to Concord, which saw him swerving and speeding, with a peak of 120 mph on the interstate before darting into suburbia to evade capture.

Eventually surrendering after a brief chase, Kitfield faced justice on April 3. For the chase and prior incidents, he was convicted of fleeing a pursuing peace officer's motor vehicle, engaging in a motor vehicle exhibition of speed, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license. Kitfield's punishment includes 60 days in jail, probation, and driving restrictions, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office. A tracking device is to be installed on Kitfield’s vehicle, and he's been given a stern warning: any future reckless driving that results in death could escalate to murder charges.

"This is a case where the defendant was gambling with human lives," District Attorney Diana Becton stated, as reported by the CHP's posting. Praising the CHP's diligence in apprehending Kitfield, she expressed relief that his actions hadn't led to the tragic outcome.
