Dallas is gearing up for summer with safety in mind, as Mayor Eric L. Johnson, Police Chief Eddie Garcia, and other city leaders join forces with the Dallas ISD to kick off the third annual Summer of Safety campaign. Slated for announcement at 10:30 a.m. on the upcoming Monday, June 3, the initiative aims to keep the city's youth engaged and out of trouble during the school break.
According to the City of Dallas, the event will unwrap at Mattie Nash-Myrtle Davis Recreation Center and will spotlight an array of summer programs designed to promote safety and wellness. Trying to hit the streets running, city officials aim to provide a structured environment for kids, which can often be a challenge when schools let out.
Joining Mayor Johnson and Police Chief Garcia are Kimberly Bizor Tolbert, Dallas' Interim City Manager, and a roster of local dignitaries including Arun Agarwal, President of the Dallas Park and Recreation Board; Dr. Stephanie Elizalde, Dallas ISD Superintendent; John Jenkins, Dallas Park and Recreation Director; Jo Giudice, Dallas Public Library Director; and Derrick Battie, a South Oak Cliff Alumnus. Each of these figures embodies a facet of the city-wide push to create a safer, more enriching summer for Dallas youth.
The annual program throws its doors wide, inviting kids to participate in educational workshops, sports, and arts, and crafts — all this, in a bid to provide alternatives to idle time that may lead to risky behavior. With its past successes, the Summer of Safety campaign seeks to reduce youth violence while fostering a sense of community and belonging. By showing them the ropes, participating kids and teens can learn new skills and form positive relationships.
