High drama unfolded on the banks of the Connecticut River last Friday night after a man, initially stopped for traffic violations, smashed into a Massachusetts State Police cruiser and led troopers on a chase that ended with a dramatic rescue from the chilly waters. As reported by MSP News, the suspect's vehicle was discovered abandoned in Holyoke, triggering a manhunt that took to the skies with MSP Air 2, piloted by Trooper Mark Giromini and Sergeant Eric Fairchild.
The aerial crew spotted a figure trying to hide behind a wall along the river's edge. Using the helicopter’s infrared camera, the crew directed ground forces to the suspect’s location. Their timely coordination proved critical as the man, identified as the one who had fled the traffic stop, sustained an injury and struggled to stay afloat in the river. Officers from Holyoke and the MSP responded with quick thinking, deploying throw-bags to prevent the man from drowning.
The situation escalated when the suspect began showing signs of hypothermia after being in the water for some time, according to the MSP News report. More than a dozen Holyoke Officers and MSP Troopers then came together in a dramatic display of teamwork, forming a human chain to pull the man to safety.
The rescued man was immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and hypothermia. Officials have confirmed that he was the suspect in the initial traffic stop incident involving the hit-and-run with a trooper’s cruiser. The swift actions of MSP Air 2's crew and the responders on the ground turned what could have been a tragic end into a successful rescue mission.
