With Memorial Day just around the corner, the District Government has announced that while some services will take a pause, others, like parks and recreation facilities, will ensure residents still have places to unwind. Operations at outdoor pools and spray parks will proceed without hitches for the holiday weekend – a boon for families looking to beat the heat, as per the Metropolitan Police Department.
The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is making a splash by keeping its outdoor pools and spray parks operational from Saturday through Monday, between the hours of 10 am to 6 pm; eager swimmers and those looking for a sprinkle of fun can find the particulars on the DPR website, it’s a surefire way to ensure the kids, and those young at heart have ample opportunity to make a splash as the summer season unofficially kicks off. In addition to the aquatics, open lands wait to embrace those seeking more terrestrial pursuits; playgrounds, athletic courts, fields, and all sheltered under the city's vast sky will welcome anyone looking to stretch their legs or lay back on the blanket of grass.
Outdoor enthusiasts and event planners can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that if they've got the paperwork in check, their plans in the city's green spaces are good as gold – no last-minute cancellations here. This was made clear in a statement on the MPDC's website which noted "All previously permitted events on these outdoor spaces will take place as scheduled".
So as the District hushes in honor of those who’ve given their all, it simultaneously opens its arms through its parks and recreation avenues, ensuring that life, as it must, goes on and that the living continue to embrace the liberties and pleasures such as a simple day at the pool, which those honored sacrificed so much to defend and that those sacrifices are woven into the everyday sanctity of our public lives, a fact as poignant as ever on Memorial Day.
