Looking to leave a mark on Miami’s cultural canvas? The Deering Estate’s Artist-in-Residence Program is calling for artists from the visual, literary, performing, and cross-disciplinary arts to apply for a creative stint in 2025. Applications are now open till August 31, announced the Miami-Dade County government yesterday.
The Deering Estate's AIR program isn't just an opportunity for artists to hone their craft. It’s a chance to tap into an environment that's historically and naturally rich—one that's intertwined with Charles Deering’s vision of patronizing the arts. As part of the initiative, artists get free reign over studio spaces nested within the Estate's historical edifices, allowing for deep dives into their chosen disciplines without concerning about application fees or residency costs.
Interested candidates aren’t left in the dark, either. An information session is scheduled for June 4 to clear up any questions about the application process—which, by the way, can be started on June 1. The Deering Estate representatives, like Cultural Arts Curator Liliam Dominguez, have extolled the program's success, citing "the privilege of presenting and collaborating with internationally-acclaimed visual artists, composers, musicians, playwrights, authors, choreographers, and performers," according to Miami-Dade County website.
With the program's inception, artists are expected to flex their creative muscles while engaging with an enthusiastic public. Collaboration is heartily encouraged, be it with fellow residents, the Estate programs, or even the wider community. Studios might differ slightly, but the message is clear: whether you're striking solo or teaming up, this place is a sanctuary for the arts—sans overnight housing. And remember, artists are recommended to interact with spectators during regular studio hours if they can.
About the Deering Estate itself? It's a cultural heavyweight located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. in Miami, Florida. A 21st-century house museum, it's a nexus for cultural and ecological education, as well as a recognized national landmark. It boasts partnerships with Miami-Dade County Departments and The Deering Estate Foundation, all to sustain the artistic and ecological endeavors that Charles Deering himself would have applauded.
