Denton's Joe Skiles Park is set to unveil its new look and amenities during the "Move with the Mayor" event on June 1, lining up with National Trails Day celebrations. Residents are encouraged to join Mayor Gerard Hudspeth to explore the improved park and partake in community fitness activities at 10 AM. The park's revamp, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and park dedication fees, features a new quarter-mile trail, a children’s playground, a pavilion for gatherings, and essential irrigation upgrades, the City of Denton, Texas announced.
One of the top requests from locals, a shade over the play area, has been addressed to beat the Texan heat, and with forty trees now lining the park, there's a promise of more green and less sunburn. New benches dot the landscape for a restful park experience, while the pesky sandburs are on their way out thanks to the new sod and an improved irrigation system, although it may take a while before those "stickers" are gone for good.
The event ties into the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention's initiative, Move with the Mayor, where mayors nationwide promote active lifestyles as part of their civic duty, according to the National Forum. Joe Skiles Park's fresh trail also underscores the commitment to integrating trail systems in urban spaces, highlighting the value of local parks and trails in enriching community health and wellness.
Chris Escoto, the contact person for the event, invites Denton residents to come down with their walking shoes, bikes, or skates for some outdoor fun and to celebrate the park’s new offerings, in a community where every step taken is a step towards a healthier future.
