In the wake of a tornado that ripped through Denton County, local authorities have been working tirelessly to support the recovery efforts for families who have lost everything. According to Denton County, Texas, more than 20 families experienced the destruction of their homes at an RV trailer park near Lake Ray Roberts Marina following Saturday's tornado.
Amid the chaos, a young woman's quick thinking enabled first responders to rescue her from beneath her RV trailer by using her car keys to trigger the alarm, signaling her location in the rubble. Other residents also suffered injuries, with several taken to hospitals as their homes were pummeled by the powerful storm, which struck after dark, according to officials.
The following day saw residents returning to the scene—a landscape of wreckage and loss—to salvage what remained of their belongings. The daughter of a hospitalized resident rejoiced at finding her father's medicine among the debris, capturing a moment of relief amid overwhelming devastation.
Elsewhere, boat owners faced the sight of disarray at the marina, where boat slips lay in ruins. With widespread damage reported in areas including Isle du Bois State Park and power outages affecting hundreds, the county's emergency teams sprang into action to provide essential supplies and services. These efforts included delivering water, food from the Salvation Army, and transportation, details revealed in the Denton County statement.
The magnitude of the tornado's impact was clear as crews also attended to repair power lines and clear highways, like Interstate 35, which saw hours-long shutdowns from overturned 18-wheelers and downed power lines. The National Weather Service had issued a Tornado Warning late Saturday, signaling the imminent threat to northern Denton County which was confirmed near Valley View.
The Denton County Sheriff’s Office and other county road crews responded to the crisis by checking on households, clearing trees from roads, and assisting trapped individuals, such as those at a Shell station near the Denton-Cooke counties border.
In response to the widespread power outages, authorities opened a shelter at Sanger ISD Indian Gym for individuals affected by the tornado, promising to keep it open overnight for the community. The United Way of Denton County is also collecting donations to aid the victims, giving a platform for financial support to those in dire need.
