Six people were rushed to the hospital after a suspect fleeing police slammed into an Uber in Detroit, resulting in a devastating collision on the city's west side. According to Detroit Police Chief James White, the confrontation began in Southfield and culminated in a grievous crash, leaving one female Uber driver in critical condition after being ejected from her vehicle. "I'm sure Southfield (police) is going to be issuing charges for fleeing and eluding as well as some other charges," White stated per The Detroit News.
The suspect, wanted for parole violation related to second-degree murder and cocaine possession, was being chased Monday evening around 5:30 p.m. near 12 Mile Road and Northwestern Highway by Southfield police, reports WXYZ. The chase proceeded to rapidly intensify southward, finally ending when the suspect's vehicle blasted through a red light and crashed into an Uber traveling west on Outer Drive, intersecting with James Couzens Freeway.
White confirmed that both the driver and the suspect were among those taken into custody and hospitalized. The identities of the four other victims, who have been described as being in serious condition, have not been released. The Uber passenger's dire predicament was highlighted by the Detroit chief, "The key is that we're handling the investigation because of the critical nature of the accident," as told to The Detroit News.
Meanwhile, ClickOnDetroit provided more details, stating that the Uber was carrying a woman passenger who was ejected in the clash. White divulged to clickondetroit that "The parole is wanted as a parole absconder and also for possession of cocaine, so that's what led to the pursuit, and we're handling the investigation, and we're leading the investigation." As the case proceeds, with the Detroit Police Department in charge, the implications of the suspect's previous parole violations and the ongoing investigation have yet to fully unfold.
