A 26-year-old woman from Detroit suffered injuries in an early morning freeway incident after dozing off behind the wheel, according to Michigan State Police. The single-car accident, which occurred on westbound Interstate 94 near Nine Mile Road, resulted in the freeway being shut down for an extensive two-hour investigation. The Detroit News reports that the driver was transported to a hospital and is in stable condition.
State police informed that the vehicle, carrying the driver and a passenger, left the asphalt, climbed an embankment before flipping over and rolling back onto I-94's concrete floor. The passenger, thus sustaining only minor injuries, recounted to the authorities that the driver had succumbed to sleep before the car veered off course. No other vehicles were involved in the predawn rollover, as per the WWJ Newsradio announcement.
Officials were forced to redirect traffic off the westbound lanes onto I-696 during the closure. The situation not only created delays for morning commuter. The westbound freeway section was cleared and traffic flow was resumed around 9:30 a.m., confirmed by CBS Detroit.
The investigation is still underway, no other details about the crash have been made available, aside from the fact conducted by Michigan State Police.
