A grim tableau unfolded in the 500 block of East Oltorf Street on Saturday night as two lives were abruptly cut short in a violent car crash. According to the Austin Police Department, a tractor-trailer exiting a shopping center collided with a sedan at 9:18 p.m. The crash claimed the lives of the sedan's driver, Cynthia Boone, and passenger, Miraj Parson, who were pronounced dead at the hospital. Boone was a 42-year-old Black female, and Parson, a Black female aged 19.
The accident escalated the city's grim tally of traffic fatalities to 32 this year, a slight decrease compared to the same date last year. The Austin Police are treating this incident as the 31st fatal crash of 2024. The two other passengers in the sedan suffered serious injuries and are currently receiving care. The driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed, stayed at the scene, and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, as reported by the authorities.
Investigative efforts continue as the Vehicular Homicide unit of the APD looks into the details surrounding the event. As of now, no charges have been filed and the driver of the tractor-trailer was found not to be under the influence during the preliminary assessment.
