A grim scene has unfolded in North Miami where residents of Keystone Point neighborhood have stumbled upon the disturbing sight of dozens of dead ducks. The spate of duck deaths, believed to be caused by gunfire, has prompted local authorities to launch a police investigation.
Over the weekend, concerned neighbors were confronted with the harsh reality of numerous ducks fatally shot, an act which not only raises questions about animal cruelty but also challenges the safety and sanctity of their community. "Every morning that I’m walking, I’m finding dead ducks," one man told WSVN. Edgardo Erb, another local resident, reported finding multiple ducks dead on his property alone.
Residents like Kim Kaplan Marchena, who has lived in the area for 23 years, finds the violence against the ducks particularly troubling, noting to NBC Miami, "I mean, it's pretty frightening to the fact that we might be living amongst somebody who is that psychotic, that wants to like kill these ducks." Marchena has diligently documented the aftermath and reported the incidents to the authorities.
North Miami Police Chief Cherise Giordani Gause emphasized that there are legal means to address nuisance issues with ducks, rather than resorting to harming them. "If there is a nuisance issue with the ducks, there are other remedies, other than harming them," she stated. North Miami Councilman Scott Galvin also weighed in, asserting, “We’re taking reports like we would any type of crime against a human being. This is a crime. Shooting and killing an animal on other peoples' property in a public setting is not excusable,” as reported by NBC Miami.
Despite the lack of noise associated with the killings and the absence of evidence on surveillance footage, police are continuing to investigate the incident. City officials and law enforcement are urging anyone with information to step forward and contact the North Miami Police Department.
