A tragedy unfolded over the Memorial Day weekend as two separate drowning incidents claimed lives on lakes in Oakland County. According to FOX 2, an 11-year-old boy drowned at the Holly Recreation Area on Saturday. Calls to Michigan State Police indicated a child was missing in the water around 6:30 P.M.
The boy was reportedly playing in the water on an inner tube just 10 feet from the shore when he submerged. "The boy he was playing with was on the shore when he saw the 11-year-old go under the water, come back up, and call for help before going back under," said the source. Witnesses and the Oakland County Marine Services conducted a vigorous search before the child was recovered from the water at 7:25 p.m. and CPR was initiated, stated mlive. After being transported to a local hospital, the 11-year-old was pronounced deceased.
Meanwhile, as reported by WXYZ, a separate incident occurred at Galloway Lake. A 28-year-old man from Brownsville, Texas, drowned in the lake. Emergency teams, including the Southeast Michigan Dive Group, responded after a 911 call at 7:40 p.m. The victim was located about 250 feet from shore in 37 feet of water.
In both cases, there were no lifeguards present at the time of the drownings. Investigations are ongoing into these incidents, with Michigan State Police conducting interviews with witnesses at the Holly Recreation Area, and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office spearheading the investigation into the Galloway Lake drowning.
