A stroll turned deadly when an SUV veered off the road and plowed into two pedestrians — killing one — on Westheimer Road in Houston on Monday evening, according to police. The collision took place around 7:25 p.m., and the Houston Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Division is investigating the catastrophe that left a man hospitalized in stable condition and a woman tragically dead.
The vehicle, a silver Hyundai Santa Fe, was headed eastbound when it swerved out of its lane onto the sidewalk, then slammed into the pair as they walked westbound according to a statement by Sergeant V. Vo and Officer N. Duval of the HPD. After striking the victims, the out-of-control Hyundai proceeded to collide with a light pole, at which point it came to a stop.
Emergency responders promptly transported both victims to a nearby hospital. The woman, 33, whose identity is yet to be verified by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, was pronounced dead upon arrival. The other pedestrian, a 40-year-old male, survived with injuries that left him in stable condition.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 31-year-old woman, displayed signs of intoxication at the scene and was taken to the hospital for treatment. No charges have been filed as the investigation, into this tragic incident, is still ongoing. The Houston police have not released any further details regarding potential charges or the identities of those involved.
